How to turn an image into one color print art

  1. 1

Add your image. Drop a PNG, JPG or WEBP, choose a file, or paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). Screenshots of lettering from Pinterest or ChatGPT work well.

  2. 2

Find the level. Press Auto level, then nudge Level until the lines look clean and the counters of letters like a, e and o stay open.

  3. 3

Choose what to keep. Keep Light parts for white lettering on a dark image, or Dark parts for black lettering on a light one.

  4. 4

Pick the garment and the ink. The tool suggests white ink on dark garments and black ink on light ones. Remove the background if it is a solid color.

  5. 5

Set the print width and download. Type the width in inches and download a transparent PNG at 300 DPI at that size.

Threshold or halftone?

A threshold makes every pixel ink or no ink with nothing in between. It is the right tool for lettering, logos, line art and stencils, where you want solid shapes and sharp edges.

A halftone keeps the shading by turning tones into dots of different sizes, which suits photos, chrome and gradient art. If your design has both, threshold the lettering, run the image through the halftone generator, and combine them in the Design Studio.

Clean lettering from a screenshot or a photo

  • Start from the largest copy you can find. The converter redraws the edges at 300 DPI, which smooths small images, but it cannot add detail that is not there.
  • Use Auto level first. It looks at every tone in the image and places the cut where ink and background separate best, then you fine tune it.
  • Watch the thin parts. Moving the level makes strokes grow or shrink. Stop before serifs and hairlines break apart or the inside of the letters fills in.
  • Keep Smooth edges off for print. Hard edges avoid the light halo that soft pixels leave on DTF transfers. Turn it on only for screens and mockups.

Make a stencil or a screen printing film positive

For a film positive, choose Dark parts, black ink and the White garment preview, then print the PNG at 100% on inkjet transparency film. The parts you keep become solid black on the film and block the light when you expose the screen.

For a spray paint or vinyl stencil, the same black and white result is your cut guide. Check the inner shapes of letters like O, A and R: on a cut stencil they fall out unless you leave small bridges that connect them to the rest.

One color on any garment

Pick the shirt color under the preview to judge the result in context: white ink on black, black ink on white, or any custom ink for a matching set. Turn on Image colors to keep the original colors of the art, so a red logo stays red while the background still disappears.

Frequently asked questions

What is a threshold image?

It is an image where every pixel is either ink or empty, split at one brightness level. Pixels on one side of the level become ink and the rest disappear, which gives clean one color art.

How do I convert a logo to one color?

Paste or drop the logo, press Auto level, choose whether to keep the light or the dark parts, then pick one ink color. Download the 300 DPI PNG and it is ready for a one color screen print or a DTF transfer.

Is the background transparent?

Yes. Everything that is not ink is fully transparent, and Background: Remove takes out a solid background color before the threshold, so you never get a white box around the design.

Can I make a stencil from a photo?

Yes. Choose Dark parts and move Level until the shapes read well. Photos with strong light and shadow work best. Remove a busy or colored background first so only the subject is left.

What resolution is the download?

300 DPI at the width you set. An 11 inch wide print is 3300 pixels wide, and the DPI is written into the PNG so print shops and design apps read the right size.

Is this converter free and private?

Yes. It is free with no signup and no watermark, and the image never leaves your browser.
